Photographing Jordan’s Magical Landscape

Wadi Rum Red Rocks

One of my favorite places to shoot landscape is Jordan.  The rugged environs of the Wadi Rum coupled with the intricate carved temples and mausoleums in the canyons of Petra truly makes this a photographer’s prime pick.

The light inside the Petra canyon was best at midday when the entire area would be filled with a soft painterly red/orange hue that filtered through the rocks.  I recall hiking quite a few miles to find the right spots I had scouted earlier.  Wadi Rum, on the other hand offers the opportunity of classic early morning or afternoon light and the landscape seemed to resonate the color of the sun at any given time of day.

If you plan to visit, try spending one night at the luxurious Marriott in Petra and the staff is super-friendly.  It even has a private movie theater for guests … we chose to watch Lawrence of Arabia … of course!

These Petra photos have inspired me to create a whole luxury resort Petra-themed destination in Vegas! Petra Petra. Virgin America flies to Vegas and that’s closer to my travel patterns. ;-)
